FAQs: Setting Up SmartPort

How do I make my SirsiDynix Symphony server Z39.50 accessible to other systems?

The SirsiDynix Symphony server is delivered to be Z39.50 accessible. However, there is information you must provide to other libraries so they can access your system.

For more information on Name Mapping policies, see Name Mapping Wizard.

What information do I need from sites in order to make Z39.50 connections to their servers?

If you wish to set up additional Z39.50 connections, obtain the following information from the site to which you will be connecting.

IP Address (###.###.##.##)
Domain Name (XXXXX.XXXXXXX.XXX)
Port Number (###)
Database Name (XXXX)
Authentication Needed (Y/N)
Authorization String (XXXXXXXXX)

The following information about the server may also need to be obtained from the site to which you will be connecting.

Whether the Z39.50 server supports result set naming
Whether the Z39.50 server supports sorting
Whether the Z39.50 server supports scanning (browsing)
Whether the Z39.50 server supports cross references
Whether or not the Z39.50 server supports intermediate results

Obtain the Use Attribute searches that are supported by the server either from the site library or the library’s automation vendor, and create a Name Mapping policy for the destination server. If you are connecting to another SirsiDynix Symphony server, determine whether the server is SirsiDynix Symphony Standard or Bath Profile compliant.

Where can I get a more complete list of Z39.50 servers?

You can view the most up-to-date Z39.50 server information on the SirsiDynix Customer Support website at https://support.sirsidynix.com/kb/125514.

How do I make a connection to my own or another SirsiDynix Symphony Z39.50 server?

Do the following to set up a Z39.50 Gateway connection to a Z39.50 SirsiDynix Symphony server so that it can be used by SmartPort.

Following are some qualifications to specific attribute values:

For the Domain Name attribute, use the domain name or IP address of the server where the SirsiDynix Symphony system resides.

The Port attribute is delivered with the value 2200. Check with your Information Systems Department regarding which port to use.

The Intermediate Results attribute must be set to No for SirsiDynix catalogs.

How do I utilize the six attribute searches available in SirsiDynix Symphony?

Beginning in Unicorn Version 2003, search names, name maps, and Z39.50 mapping attributes are delivered to make SirsiDynix’s clients Bath Profile compliant. Z39.50 searching is easier and retrieves better results when the new search mappings are used. (The suggested connection information is for an INNOPAC server.)

How do I create a Name Mapping?

Since Unicorn Version 2003, most users will never need to create a Name Mapping. Each server or type of server supports a set of searches represented by Use Attributes. Supported searches are determined by the Name Mapping policy. The Name Mapping consists of a group of search names. Available Name Mappings can contain all six Z39.50 Bib–1search attributes. SirsiDynix’s servers use either the Bath Profile Complaint (UNICRN_BTH) or SirsiDynix Symphony Standard (UNICRN_STD) server specifications for Z39.50 supported searches. When you are connecting to a SirsiDynix server, you can typically use these delivered Name Mapping policies. You can continue to use the CATALOG name mapping, but only Use Attributes are searched. You cannot take advantage of the six attribute searching.

For more information on delivered name mappings, go to Z39.50 Search Name Maps from the Z39.50 information link on the SirsiDynix Customer Support website (https://support.sirsidynix.com/kb/124707). Standard Name Mappings for other servers are also predefined. For other vendor sites or for sites that support additional attributes, you may want to create a new Name Mapping.

For example, neither the old LC (A,T,S,ANY,ISSN,ISBN,LCCN) Name Mapping nor the new VOYAGER (Endeavor Voyager Version 2000.1) name mapping meets your needs, so you create a new Name Mapping LOFC (Library of Congress).

For additional information you can use to connect to OCLC WorldCat databases, see the "Z39.50 Configuration Guide for OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging" page on the OCLC website at https://www.oclc.org/support/services/z3950/documentation/config_guide.en.html.

How do I set up my OCLC Name Mappings so we can search by OCLC Number?

Searching by OCLC Accession number is one of the most frequently used searches when connecting to OCLC.

Two values are delivered. The difference is that OCLC_ACCNUM_KEY_STRUC_WORD uses the structure attribute “word” and OCLC_ACCNUM_PHRASE uses the structure attribute “phrase”.

What are OCLC’s Z39.50 catalog server searching specifications?

Searching strategies vary depending on search type. These are the most common hints needed to search OCLC.

The Search Mode in Z39.50/SmartPort Preferences menu should be set to Word Search if you are doing a combination author and title search.
The Search Mode preference for Phrase Search should be used if you are searching for an exact title where the terms are common, such as the journal Nature.
You should use the Browse search in conjunction with search mode phrase to verify the form of the author/title/subject you are researching.
If boolean operators are part of a title in a phrase search enclose the search term in double quotes as in this example.

“WAR AND PEACE”

Do not include “a”, “an” or “the” if they are the first word of a title in a phrase search.
Type ISSN with hyphens.
Do not include hyphens in ISBN and LCCN searches.
Include spaces and hyphens in a MUSIC NUMBER phrase search.
Exclude all punctuation in GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT number searches.
The OCLC number is searched via use attribute 12. Create an OCLC number search name mapping.
When searching by OCLC number you do not need to include the ocm prefix.

For more complete searching information, go to OCLC’s Searching Tips for OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging at http://www.oclc.org/support/services/z3950/documentation/searchtips.en.html.
