Entry Types

The following Entry Types are used with the Format policies.

Author

The Author Entry Type indicates that this entry contains author information. In some situations, SirsiDynix Symphony carries one line of author information from a bibliographic record into another window, such as displaying author information from the associated bibliographic record using the Display Serial Control wizard.

For example, the 710 entry in the SERIAL Format has been designated as an Author Entry Type. When moving from the bibliographic record display to the serial control record display, information from the 710 entry appears in the serial control record.

Authoritative Term

The Authoritative Term Entry Type indicates which entry in the format contains the authorized form of a heading. Only one entry in a given authority-purpose Format policy should be marked as the Authoritative Term.

For example, in the LCSH Format, the 150 entry contains the authoritative form of the entry.

Bulletin

The Bulletin Entry Type indicates that this entry contains the Information Desk policy name that is used to link bibliographic or memo records to an Information Desk heading. By default, the 598 entry has a Bulletin Entry Type.

Call Number Overflow

This Entry Type is used to indicate which entry in a format should contain any overflow characters that are encountered when a record with a call number longer than the maximum allowable length is loaded. The entry will contain a call number sequence key (used internally by SirsiDynix Symphony), a colon, then the full call number. By default, the 597 entry is used for call number overflow.

Captions/Patterns

The Captions/Patterns Entry Type is used in MARC Holdings Format policies and indicates that this entry is used for typing and displaying caption and pattern data. By default, the 853, 854, and 855 entries are marked as Captions/Patterns fields. SirsiDynix Symphony combines data from the enumeration and captions/patterns entries to display holdings information for a serial record.

Circulation Note

The Circulation Entry Type is used in Item Extended Information format only. Entries of this type will display item notes as items are charged and discharged.

Comment

The Comment Entry Type indicates that this entry is a free-text field for comments. Comments display in the e-Library and in WorkFlows.

Complex See Reference

Used only in MARC-type Authority Format policies, Complex See Reference entries contain see references accompanied with explanatory text.

For example, in the LCSH Format, the 260 entry is a complex see reference.

Complex See Also Reference

Used only in MARC-type Authority Format policies, Complex See Reference entries contain see references accompanied with explanatory text.

For example, in the LCSH Format, the 360 entry is a complex see also reference.

CONSER Pub Pattern

Used only for the 891 entry which includes the CONSER publication pattern chronologies. This Entry Type supports the internal processing SirsiDynix Symphony performs during the load pattern work flow in serial control wizards.

Email Address

The Email Address Entry Type indicates that this entry contains an email address. Email addresses may be used by SirsiDynix Symphony when sending a notice to users, and may also be used when sending electronic communications to vendors, such as claims or other EDI (electronic document interchange) documents.

Enumeration

The Enumeration Entry Type is used in MARC Holdings Format policies and indicates that this entry is used for typing and displaying enumeration data. By default, the 863, 864, and 865 entries are marked as Enumeration fields.

Floating Subdivision

The Floating Subdivision Entry Type is only used in Authority-purpose Format policies and indicates that this entry is used for free floating subdivisions. The 180, 181, and 182 entries are marked as Floating Subdivision fields and are part of authority records supplied by the National Library of Medicine. These entries are indexed and browseable. Free floating subdivisions show up with the + symbol before the subdivision in the browse index.

Note: Free floating subdivisions are strictly for the cataloger’s use. They are not cross-referenced and are not used for authorization.

Hypertext Entry

Entries of the type Hypertext Entry are used as search strings by hypertext searching in the e-Library. If a Hypertext Entry exists in a record and is configured to appear as part of a synonym list, it will be underlined in the e-Library. Clicking the entry will make SirsiDynix Symphony perform a search for related records.

For example, in the MARC Format, the call number, Personal Author, Title, Subject Term, Added Author, and Added Title entries may be marked as Hypertext Entries.

Image

The Image Entry Type is used to identify the entry that will contain a pointer to a related electronic file, such as an image, a World Wide Web page, or a text document. The presence of an Image Entry Type entry in a record causes the M-Media button to appear. By default, the 856 entry is marked as an Image Entry Type.

Note: The 856 electronic access tag is included in the standard delivery of the MARC and MARC holdings formats.

For example, a bibliographic record contains a link to a WWW page. When the record appears the e-Library, the entry is underlined. To display the associated Web page, double-click the entry. The following is a sample 856 entry that links to a WWW page.

Electronic access: 856 :1 :|fWWW|uhttp://www.sirsi.com|zSirsi

Improper Term

An Improper Term Entry Type marks entries to be used for thesauri and browse lists. Improper Terms are non-valid forms of a heading that should have cross-references to the valid form of the heading.

For example, in the LCSH Format, the 450 entry is an Improper Term.

Entries with the Improper Term Entry Type derive information about which Authority Indexes and Thesauri to use from the entry marked as the Authoritative Term in a particular format. For instance, in the LCSH format, the 450 entry has the Entry Type Improper Term. Since 4XX terms are usually posted to authority indexes, SirsiDynix Symphony uses the authority index specified in the 150 entry, which is the only entry in the LCSH format of the Entry Type Authoritative Term.

ISBN

The ISBN Entry Type is used to identify the entry that contains the International Standard Book Number (ISBN). The entry containing the ISBN is used in BISAC applications.

ISSN

Entries marked as ISSN entries are used when going from an Item Lookup step to the Creating Control ID step of the Create a Serial Control wizard. Data in an ISSN entry will be inserted in the SISAC ID field.

Item Holdings

The Item Holdings Entry Type identifies the entry that contains item information including barcode, library, material type, location, and price.

Language

The Language Entry Type marks an entry or entries to use for determining a title’s language when it is loaded into the system.

By default in MARC21 formatted records, SirsiDynix Symphony checks the 041 entry, then the language bytes of the 008 field, then any entry marked as having a Language Entry Type. If language information is found in any of the above entries, it is posted to the index. Therefore, a title may be indexed under more than one language. If there is no language information in the 041 and 008, and there are no entries of the Entry Type Language (or any such entries have no data in them), the default language as specified in the Language policy will be posted to the index.

For UNIMARC formatted records, Symphony will index language in the following way:

In the 101 tag subfield a
If not found, then in the 100 tag, bytes 22-24

Latest Serial Issues

The entry marked as having the Entry Type Latest Serial Issues will be updated every time a serial issue that is under serial control is received, provided that the serial control record specifies that latest issues should appear in the catalog. By default, the 599 entry is marked as a Latest Serial Issues Entry Type.

Libraries Entry

In multilibrary systems, the entry marked as the Libraries Entry contains the Library policy name of libraries which own a given item. Since this information is maintained by the system, by default this entry cannot be edited. By default, the 596 entry is marked as the Libraries Entry.

Loading

The Loading Entry Type will be used in Orderline Extended Information formats only. An entry that is marked as having the Loading Entry Type will appear when using the Link Order Line Holdings to Titles wizard. This entry type will be available in a future release of SirsiDynix Symphony.

Local

Entries that are marked as having the Local Entry Type are not replaced when a matching record is overlaid. Local information is retained in the record, along with the new information from the overlaying record. Entries used to record information that is unique to a given site, such as local notes (590), are often marked as local.

For example, the 690 (Local Subject) entry has been marked as a local entry. If a matching record is loaded into the catalog, and SirsiDynix Symphony has been instructed to update bibliographic information as part of the load, then all entries except those marked as local will be overwritten. For example, the 690 entry will be retained in the new record; all other entries from the old record will be overwritten.

Location

The Location Entry Type is used in MARC Holdings Format policies and indicates that this entry is used for typing and displaying information about the location of items represented in a holdings record. By default, the 852 entry is marked as a Location entry.

Main Entry

The Main Entry Type is similar to the Author Entry Type in that it identifies an entry that contains author information. Main Entry entries take precedence over Author Entry types when SirsiDynix Symphony carries one line of author information from a bibliographic record into another window, such as displaying author information from the associated bibliographic record using the Display Serial Control wizard. Typically, all 1XX entries are marked as Main Entry

MARC Holdings

This Entry Type is used in Catalog-purpose formats to mark entries that contain MARC holdings data.

Name

This Entry Type is used in Serial Control Extended Information formats to mark entries that represent the name of the serial part or piece. These entries appear in a hit list of multiple serial control records.

Note

The Note Entry Type is used to mark entries which contain information about the scope or usage of a heading.

Example In the LCSH Format, the 666 entry is an explanatory reference that may be of help to users.

Old Authoritative Term

The Old Authoritative Term Entry Type is used to mark the entry in which the old authoritative term should be written when the entry containing the Authoritative Term is updated.

Example In the LCSH Format, the 961 entry is used to store the Old Authoritative Term.

Paying

The Paying Entry Type will be used in Orderline Extended Information formats only. An entry that is marked as having the Paying Entry Type appears only when using the Pay Invoice wizard. This entry type will be available in a future release of SirsiDynix Symphony.

Phone

The Phone entry type indicates that this entry contains a telephone number. Phone numbers may appear when displaying users, and the phone number of the user whose hold becomes available appears when an item which has holds is discharged. Also, you can configure the User Search to search by phone number. If there are multiple entries in the user address format with the phone entry type, the first phone number entered will display in the user lists.

Physical Form

This Entry Type is used in Serial Control Extended Information formats to mark entries that represent the physical form statement. These entries will appear in a hit list of multiple serial control records.

Pub Date Entry Types

Entries with one of the five Pub Date Entry Types are examined when a bibliographic record is loaded to determine the publication date of the item. When a record is loaded, SirsiDynix Symphony first looks at the 008 Publication Date bytes for a publication date. If the program does not find a publication date there, it checks the 264|c field (if the second indicator is set to 1) and then the 260|c field. If no date is found, then each tag in the record with a data entry type of publication date is checked. The first non-empty tag with an entry type of publication date will be used for the publication date. If all tags with an entry type of publication date are empty, then the publication date field of the item will be empty. If a publication date is found in an entry using a Pub Date Entry Type, the date will be posted to the publication date field in the format YYYY.

For example, a publication date of 03102003 with a Pub Date Entry Type (MMDDYYYY) will post as 2003. A publication date of 03 with a Pub Date Entry Type (YY) will also post as 2003.

Public

The Public Entry Type is used in Orderline Extended Information formats only. Entries of this type will display a public note about an order in the online public access catalog.

Public Note

The Public Note Entry Type is used in the Item Extended Information format only. Entries of this type will display an item note in the online public access catalog.

Receiving

The Receiving Entry Type will be used in Orderline Extended Information formats only. An entry marked as having the Receiving Entry Type will only appear when using the Receive Order wizard. This entry type will be available in a future release of SirsiDynix Symphony.

Search Relevance

The Search Relevance Entry Type is used for entries used in relevance ranking.

Sino

The Sino Entry Type is used for Chinese MARC entries.

Staff Note

The Staff Note Entry Type is used in the Item Extended Information format only. Entries of this type include notes that display to staff only.

Staff Only

The Staff Only Entry Type is used in Request-purpose and Extended Info-purpose formats. Entries of this type are for use by staff only.

Subject

The Subject Entry Type is used in Catalog-purpose formats. It is used by the e-Library software to identify bibliographic entries that are “subjects” and build lists of the “Most Popular” subjects for the library and “My Favorite” subjects for the individual user. This entry type also identifies subject entries for the Propose Authority functionality of the Validate Headings helper.

Textual Holdings

Entries of the type Textual Holdings are used in MARC Holdings Format policies and are used to describe a library’s holdings in a given serial in a free text format (as opposed to a formatted display). By default, the 866, 867, and 868 entries are marked as Textual Holdings entries.

Title

The Title Entry Type indicates that this entry contains title information. In some situations, SirsiDynix Symphony carries one line of title information from a bibliographic record into another window, such as displaying title information from the associated bibliographic record in the Display Serial Control wizard.

Triple Posted

Entries of the Entry Type Triple Posted are posted to an index in three ways.

Verbatim
With specified marks of punctuation converted to hyphens
With hyphens, spaces, and specified marks of punctuation stripped out

For example, an entry marked for triple posting contains the following data.

A-1234/5 1996

The entry would be posted to indexes as follows.

A-1234-5/ 1996

A-1234/5-1996

A123451996

Uniform Title

The Uniform Title Entry Type is used to identify entries that contain uniform titles.

Union Status

The Union Status Entry Type identifies entries used in updating specialized union databases.

Unlabeled Reference

Used only in MARC-type Authority Format policies, entries marked as Unlabeled References display detailed cross-reference information without using a preceding label.

User Reply

The User Reply Entry Type indicates which entry contains the reply to a library’s response to a request.

For example, a user has placed a new title purchase request. The library has replied to the request. When the user reads the reply, a response to the reply may be sent by clicking Modify. A new entry appears in the window, and the user may type a reply.

WWW Image

An entry of the WWW Image Entry Type is used only in WebCat to link a bibliographic record to an image file. When the bibliographic record is displayed, the image file also appears. By default, the 977 entry is used for this purpose.

For example, a bibliographic record contains the following entry.

WebCat image: 977 : :|cBest Picture, 1985|i/Images/ACADEMY.gif

When this record appears in WebCat, the associated image file also appears.

Z3950 Database Name

Entries marked with this Entry Type carry over the name of the Z39.50 database from which the Request button was selected.

For example, the Source entry in the ILL-BOOK Format policy is marked with the Entry Type Request Z3950 Database Name. When a request is created that uses the ILL-BOOK Format policy, the name of the last Z39.50 database used will be inserted automatically in the Source field.

Zip Code

The Zip Code Entry Type indicates that this entry contains a zip code or postal code. SirsiDynix Symphony reports, such as the overdue report, offer the ability to sort notices by zip code or postal code. Marking an entry as the Zip Code Entry Type tells SirsiDynix Symphony which entry to use from the address portion of the record when sorting by zip code or postal code.
