The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings (Updsubfield) report replaces or deletes the text of a specified subfield in a list of MARC headings tags for a selected set of bibliographic records.

The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report contains the following tabs.

This report can only be used for MARC 21 bibliographic records. It will not work correctly on non-MARC 21 bibliographic records (such as UKMARC, CNMARC, or UNIMARC).

On the Title Selection tab, specify the catalog record formats of the bibliographic records to be modified by the report. You may limit your bibliographic record selection to visible and/or shadowed material by selecting Yes, No, or Both for the Shadowed option. By default, review records are excluded from consideration. You can select review records for modification by selecting Yes in the Review Record option.

On the Shadow tab, select Yes to search only in the shadow catalog for the specified string, select No to search only the visible catalog, or select Both to search both the shadow catalog and the visible catalog.

On the Subfield tab, you are required to provide data for the MARC Tag Number, Subfield, String to Match, and Edit Operation fields. In the MARC Tag Number field, you can select the Tag/Indicators List gadget to select MARC tags and indicators. If the selected edit operation is Replace, you must specify a string in the String Replacement field.

The printed report output includes the text of the modified bibliographic information entries for selected records to show the text before and after modification. If the List Updated Entries check box on the Subfield tab is cleared, the output is not printed.

It is possible and recommended to design the report, save it as a template, and run the report without updating the data to verify the modifications that will be made. Actual modifications will be made only if the Update Database check box is selected on the Subfield tab.

Your changes will be searchable immediately in the dynamic index.

Important Considerations When Running this Report

The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report differs from the Edit Bibliographic Data Globally (Globaledit) report as follows.
The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report more easily updates or deletes the specified subfield in a list of MARC tags than the Edit Bibliographic Data Globally report.
The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report can only be used on MARC 21 bibliographic records.
The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report performs only literal matching.
The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report supports only the Replace and Delete operations. The Edit Bibliographic Data Globally report supports Delete, Replace, and Substitute operations.
The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report can only modify bibliographic records. The Edit Bibliographic Data Globally report can edit MARC holdings records in addition to bibliographic records.
The Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report can process multiple entries, but processes only one matching string and one subfield per run of the report. The Edit Bibliographic Data Globally report can perform a list of operations on multiple matching strings and entries simultaneously.
Changes you make with the Replace Subfields in MARC Headings report are immediately searchable in the dynamic index. If you make changes using the Edit Bibliographic Data Globally report, the Add, Delete, Update Databases report must be run before your changes are searchable.
