Hyperion Terms Defined

Managed Resource

A resource is the basic unit managed by the Hyperion DMA. A resource is composed of descriptive attribute information called metadata, and pointers to one or more (or no) archived media files.

Metadata Record (DUBLIN, HYPERX Format Attributes)

A metadata record is a distinct set of attributes which describe a digital resource. A metadata record may exist in the system without being attached media files, but all media files in the system must be attached to one or more metadata records.

This basic set of attributes can be expanded to satisfy particular collection requirements using the optional Hyperion Metadata Manager.

Media File

A media file is a digital computer file of information to be managed by the DMA system. This information may include, but is not limited to books, periodicals, reports, drawings, manuals, test results, standard procedures and practices, and other printed material. It may also refer to multimedia resources, such as audio or video recordings.

Storage Area

A storage area is a repository of media files managed by the system. At any given time, a storage area is assigned to a physical storage device by the system administrator, but this assignment may be changed at will. A Hyperion DMA system may have multiple storage areas.

Collection Hierarchy (Directory Tree)

The Hyperion DMA provides organizational Resource Types that make it easier for administrators to maintain the data, and for users to access the metadata. A structure is created by defining and arranging managed Resource Types into a hierarchical, parent-child structure.

Depending on the material being organized and archived, other metaphors are possible and may be more appropriate. One metaphor, popular with library archivists, is the shelf/box/folder/item container metaphor; another, popular with experienced PC users, is the monolithic device/folder/file metaphor of the Windows Explorer.

Resource Type Attributes (Resource Types)

Resource Type Attributes are the policies that classify the resources that are contained in the metadata. Resource Type Attributes may be ABSTRACT, BIBLIOGRAPHY, COLLECTION, or VOLUME. Resource Type Attribute Policies define the values that are available for the Resource Type.

Resource Instances

Resource Instances refer to occurrences of a Resource Type and is applied to the actual resources, documents, photos and so forth, managed by the Hyperion DMA. For example, if Volume is defined as a Resource Type, Volumes 13, 14, and 15 would be specific instances of that Resource Type.
