Overview

The Hyperion Digital Media Archive (DMA) system is an electronic repository for information from a wide variety of media. The DMA is designed to be accessible by various application processors through computer networks. This makes the stored digital media readily available to researchers, engineers, managers, students, hobbyists, and other library patrons, enabling them to search, view, and print documents and images contained in the metadata. The Hyperion DMA can be used to manage electronic files of any format, in association with catalog records in the SirsiDynix Symphony system. Its primary mission is to support the search and retrieval needs of its users, while protecting the information stored within it.

The Hyperion system is modular and may be configured to meet a variety of customer requirements. Its architecture is based on the client/server model, and can operate as a complete standalone digital media archive system, or in tandem with a SirsiDynix Symphony library automation system as a back-end, hyperlinked digital media file store, or in its fully expanded form, as both. To achieve this level of integration for effortless user operation, the library must address a number of key technology issues that can determine the usefulness and ultimate success of the online media initiative. The Hyperion products have been designed to address many of these issues.

Files can be captured from electronic digital sources, as well as from non-digital media, including paper, film, audio, video, and others. During the capture operation, descriptive attribute records for these files can be created and organized into a hierarchical classification structure to support end-user browsing of archived material by context. The key words from these descriptive records, or metadata records, is automatically indexed by the system to support end-user search operations. Furthermore, the metadata records and their associated media files can be hyperlinked to catalog records in the e-Library, or other citation databases in the SirsiDynix Symphony library automation system. WorkFlows client wizards are used to help manage the Hyperion system.

In order to use Hyperion, the SirsiDynix Administrator first needs to review “Understanding User Access and Security” in Hyperion and modify the appropriate User Access policies to allow access to the Resource Manager wizard (under ”Other” on the Access List tab).
